I’m in charge of community relations/local charity stuff for our office at work.  This past saturday we held our first charity event for the office.  Major stress because of the time limits but everything came together literally at the last minute.  We didn’t receive the check we were presenting them until the morning of the event.  But it all worked out.

We worked with a church in Trenton (‘Lion of Judah’) to help them keep school age kids off the streets and out of trouble during the summer when they don’t have school to keep them occupied.  We bought the kids shoes and sleeveless jerseys for their games.  We gave them a check for $1,500 that would cover the cost of renting out a gym for the kids to play in, referees for the games and anything else that might help the kids.  We also bought trophies and certificates for the event itself which was a freethrow contest.  Divided into three age groups we gave out three trophies in each group.  Granted, I know I’m useless with a basketball in hand, but some of these kids were absolutely incredible.  Kids that, from their size, you wouldn’t think they’d even be able to lift a basketball were making baskets left and right.  It was awesome.

Here are some of the photos from Saturday  :)

Now that this one is done, I’m nervously looking forward to the next one.  Now that I know what challenges we’ll have to look out for while planning, it should make the next one go even smoother (in other words… don’t set a date until you know for sure you can get the shoes in time ;) ).

Some great t-shirts!

Ever see Danny Deckchair?  If not you should.  Similar to the movie (which was similar to a real life event in the early eighties) a guy from Oregon strapped himself into a lawn chair attached to just over 100 giant helium balloons and sent himself skyward.  193 miles later he touched back down to earth.
